Ucluelet Aquarium

On my last day in Tofino I visited the Ucluelet Aquarium. I know these days everyone is up in arms about aquariums but Ucluelet does things a little differently. What’s different you ask? They return their specimens to the ocean. That’s right. Specimens are collected from the waters of Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds and then returned to the wild.

Karma was in our favour and when we arrived we were informed that for the next week admission had been covered by Cermaq. Cermaq is farming Atlantic salmon on the pacific coast of British Columbia.  Their representative chatted with us for a while and we may or may not have been convinced that farmed salmon was as good for you as wild. (Not really) Thanks to Cermaq for covering our admission. We spent longer in the aquarium than we expected. So many cool things to look at and touch tables, I had my hands in all of them!

I may have one more post lurking around. Stayed tuned!
